OUGD401 - Study Task 4 (semiotic analysis)

Shown here is the film poster for the 1999 David Fincher film, Fight Club.
The poster shows two men, one in the foreground (Brad Pitt) and one in the background (Ed Norton). The man in the foreground instantly seems more important as he is partly covering the face of the second man and he is further forward in the composition. At the very front a hand is shown clutching a bar of soap with the name of the film on. This is in the top left corner of the image, it is in the foreground and is also one of the largest elements within the composition all which lead the eye to that first.  The name of the starring actors and the director is displayed in the top right corner in a block typeface. There is a grungey texture over the type. This makes the film look slightly edgy and aggressive. The way the hand is clutching the soap so tightly also adds to this connotation.
The facial expressions of both of the men are very different showing a contrast in personalities. The man in the foreground has a neutral facial expression, he is not showing much emotion. This makes him look in control, again adding to his imortance that has already been connoted by his position in the composition. We can see that the man in the background has a mischievous expression, he looks as if he is trying to hold in laughter. His smirk makes him look childish but due to the other connotations in this image it makes him look sinister and unforgiving.
The man in the background is wearing a shirt and tie, which in western society is seen as smart formal clothing. However his clothing looks rather dishevelled which makes him look as if he is rebelling against these cultural codes. The lighting of the image, combined with the bare brick wall in the background convey to the viewer that the mens surroundings are undesirable and again adds to the grittiness this poster conveys.
Although this poster is very simple and only includes a few key elements It still manages to give off connotations of aggression and anger but in very subtle ways.
